Fuel Tank Replacement

Ok, so I received all the parts needed to replace the fuel tank. Since the fuel injection was removed in the past, I would be able to remove the fuel tank without removing the engine. First I disconnected the battery, then in the above pic, I removed the fan, and the oil filler assembly with cap below it.

Working in the engine compartment from access inside and outside I removed the carburetor and then the 4 studs from the intake manual. I stuffed a clean rag in the intake manifold to keep dirt and debris from getting in it. I then worked on removing the grey panel to get access to the tank. There was a combination of bolts in the engine compartment and a couple from underneath that I was able to access after jacking up the bus. I also removed the distributor cap, and tucked it below the intake manifold to keep it low. The distributor rotor and ignition coil were both moved as well.

Luckily, someone in the past made an access hole to get to the fuel sending unit inside the bus. Removing the sending unit I was able to pump out the bad old gas. There are a few other things that I had to do, but I don’t want to bore you with every step involved, but if you want to know them, drop me an email. The tank just had enough clearance to come to be moved from its location and over the engine and out through the engine lid.

The new tank was installed in reverse of removal, also installed was the fuel sending unit, fuel filler hose, fuel filler neck, and a stainless steel locking gas cap.

I than ran into an issue with the fuel hoses, as the one that came off the fuel tank was 6mm and the one for the fuel pump and fuel pump to carburetor was 8mm. Using a fuel filter for a carbureted motor such as a VW Beetle fixed this as it is stepped and works with both 6mm & 8mm hoses. I could now fill the tank with new gas.

The Bus finally runs again!
