This Old VW Bus

Repair, Preservation and Upgrades

Ok, it’s mine…Now what do I do?

The Bus was sitting for 8 years before I bought it, and I didn’t own one for 16 years. I started with cleaning it out and doing the first of many interior cleanings. I then installed a new battery and crossed my fingers, would it run? Yes and no. If I poured a little gasoline into the carburetor, it would sputter for a second, then die. I didn’t hear the electric fuel pump making its loud annoying noise that it always made “ra ta ta ta ta”, so I ordered a new generic electric fuel pump from Amazon.

After installing the new fuel pump, and putting 3 gallons of fresh gas in the tank, did I mention that the fuel gauge never worked when my friend owned it. That didn’t work, but it did run with the new fuel pump having a hose in a one gallon gas tank. After crawling under the bus and installing a new fuel line, still no gas. The old gas had turned to varnish. It was horrible smelling and a dark amber in color. I ordered a new tank, fuel sending unit and a few other parts that I would need in the tank replacement. More to come in next post.
